Winter bike maintenance
27/07/09
Winter is not the time for bicycling. It is not very convenient to use two-wheeled vehicle when there’s a lot of snow and ice around. With that in mind we have decided to describe the process of making a ski bike. These bikes can be used by people wearing who understand how dangerous they are and who will do everything to keep themselves protected.
To begin with, don’t use metal bars in winter. Make sure to use quality bicycle grips or simply use tape for the old ones. And don’t use a pair of new ski. You will never be able to use them after that. And never use a new bike. As you can see, only old things are good for a ski-bike. First of all, take the bake and throw away all the necessary parts, such as whels, brakes, cables, etc. But make sure to leave seat, fork, frame, seatpost, bars headset. After that you will have to cut wood and drill a couple of holes in them. Ski (front and rear) will be attached to this wood. So this wood is used to make two blocks - front and rear. There should be one block in front, and two blocks in the back.
Skis should be attached to the blocks with the help of good nails. You don’t want anything to go wrong, do you? What is more, there should be a pair of mountain skis. You need firmness and they will provide you with it. After that you just need to attach skis to the frame and enjoy the winter.
We intentionally don’t give the sizes of blocks and the ideas of how to drill holes in them. This article can just give you some ideas on how to have some fun. You can simply use it. But be very careful and don’t use ski-bike on highways or roads used by cars. And don’t forget to protect your body. This fun is dangerous.
Cleaning a chain
23/07/09
When we buy something we are sure that this new thing will work forever. But in a couple of years we experience problems. And very often it happens that products of the best quality can’t be used after a very short period of time. That is why it is very important to look after expensive and high quality goods. In this article we will concentrate on bicycles and how can a person make the chain work longer.
This is a must of every bike owner to clean the chain regularly. Bikes that have 3 speeds or less generally have 1/8-inch chains with one master link. Those with 10-5 speeds use 3/32 inch chain that is continuous. To remove 1/8-inch chain it is necessary to open that master link, pull the clip out and remove the straight plate that is on the side. If a person needs to remove 3/32-inch chain it is necessary to push a pin rivet out, align a rivet extractor with the screw pin, tighten the extractor’s screw in order to push the river to the center and do not forget to leave chain’s far side hanging. And finally, when the rivet is gets loose, the chain will separate.
Cleaning procedure is the same for 2 types of chains. First of all, it is necessary to immerse it in gas or kerosene and then scrub it with a toothbrush, for instance, to get rid of old oil and dirt. After that a chain should dry for 1 hour. Put the clean chain in motor oil, take it out and wipe off the excess oil with a rug. And let it dry for another hour. When it stops dripping, you can put it back.
Another important thing after cleaning is to check the tension of the chain. If something is wrong it can be dangerous to use it. So, if you are not sure about the tension, take your bike to a shop and ask a specialist to check it. And that is it. The whole procedure will take about 2 hours.
Tire troubles
22/07/09
Keen bicycle riders know how unpleasant it is when something happens with a tire. All of us have experienced flat tire. But it is possible to mend everything yourself. Everything is very simple. Let us see how bad tire can be repaired and look great on new bicycle wheels.
The first step will be to remove the wheel in order to get access to tire that is damaged. There is nothing complicated in removing the front wheel. Just loosen those nuts that hold the wheel. The rear tire needs a bit more time. It is necessary to remove the break band and only after that remove the damaged wheel from the frame.
Be careful when you hold the tire with your hands. Make sure there is no glass, nail or anything sharp. After that you can safely remove the tyre from the wheel, but don’t use any sharp objects for this purpose. Try to pry it with your hand or use special tire irons. If you know the exact location of a damaged spot, mark it. If you are not sure, inflate the tube and put it into water. Bubbles will start to come out from the spot where the tire has been damaged. After the leak is located, dry the tube.
Every bike has a kit. Scrape the damaged area with the top of the kit, make sure that this spot is clean. There is a special coat of adhesive that should be applied to the tube. Do everything according to the instruction in the patch kit. After everything is done, take the patch that is of appropriate size and place it over the damaged area with glue. Press the patch and wait about five minutes. Make sure that the edges are also well bounded. And finally, sprinkle this patch with powder (take talcum one) and that is it. You too can do it yourself now!
